Mastodon Image Sizes & Dimensions (2026 Guide)

Mastodon resizes your profile picture to 400x400 and your header to 1500x500 the moment you upload them. Every other number below is a server default — because Mastodon is federated, the admin of your instance can raise or lower the upload limits, so the values here are what stock Mastodon ships with.

All Mastodon Dimensions

Profile Picture

  • 400 x 400 — 1:1, cropped to fill
  • Shown as a rounded square in the default web UI, a circle in many apps
  • Max file size: 8MB

Header Image (Banner)

  • 1500 x 500 — 3:1 aspect ratio
  • The avatar overlaps the lower-left corner on profile pages
  • Max file size: 8MB

Post Image

  • 1280 x 720 — 16:9 landscape
  • 1200 x 1200 — 1:1 square
  • Downscaled above 8,294,400 pixels (4K, e.g. 3840 x 2160)
  • Up to 4 images per post; max 16MB each

Link Preview Card

  • 1200 x 630 — pulled from your site’s og:image
  • Appears when a URL is posted, once the server fetches the page

File sizes are stock Mastodon defaults. Instance admins can change them, and smaller servers often do — your instance’s about page lists the limits it actually enforces.

Mastodon profile picture size (400x400px)

Mastodon stores every avatar at exactly 400x400 pixels. Upload something larger and the server crops it to a square and scales it down; upload something smaller and it gets stretched. Starting from a 400x400 export is the only way to control what the crop keeps.

  • Non-square images are cropped, not letterboxed. A 1600x900 upload loses the left and right thirds. Square your image before uploading.
  • The mask changes per client. Mastodon’s default web interface renders avatars as rounded squares; iOS/Android apps and many third-party clients render them as circles. Keep faces and logos inside a centered circle so both look right.
  • It displays small. In a timeline the avatar is only a few dozen pixels wide. Fine detail and small text disappear — use a bold, high-contrast subject.
  • Animated GIF avatars become static. Mastodon generates a still PNG version, so don’t rely on motion for the first frame to read well.

Mastodon header image size (1500x500px)

The Mastodon header — the banner across the top of your profile — is 1500x500 pixels, a 3:1 aspect ratio. Like the avatar, it is resized server-side on upload, so exporting at the exact dimensions avoids a second round of compression.

  • Your avatar overlaps the bottom-left. Keep text and logos in the center or right two-thirds of the frame so nothing is hidden behind the profile picture.
  • The visible strip shrinks on mobile. Narrow screens crop the header horizontally rather than shrinking it, so anchor important content near the middle.
  • 3:1 matches Twitter/X. One 1500x500 export covers both platforms — see Twitter/X image sizes for the rest of that set.
  • Headers are optional. Servers show a flat color block if you skip it, which is better than a stretched low-resolution image.

Mastodon post image size and aspect ratios

Mastodon does not force a single aspect ratio on post images. It keeps the ratio you upload and only intervenes when an image exceeds 8,294,400 pixels in total area — the equivalent of 3840x2160 — at which point it is scaled down proportionally. In practice any sensible export sails under that cap.

  • 16:9 (1280x720) is the safest default. It fills the timeline width without dominating the column.
  • 1:1 (1200x1200) works well for graphics, quote cards, and screenshots.
  • 4:5 (1200x1500) claims more vertical space, the same trick that works on Threads and Bluesky.
  • Up to 4 images per post. Multiple images render in a grid, so give them a shared aspect ratio or the grid looks ragged.
  • Very tall images are cropped in the preview. The timeline thumbnail is regenerated at roughly 230,400 pixels of area, and readers tap through to see the full image.
  • Set a focal point. Mastodon lets you click the spot in an image that must survive cropping. Use it for anything where the subject is off-center.

Alt text (Mastodon calls it a description) accepts up to 10,000 characters, and the culture on the fediverse strongly expects it. Write it — it is the single most-noticed difference between a Mastodon post and a cross-post from elsewhere.

Mastodon image file size limits

These are stock Mastodon’s defaults. Because every instance is independently operated, an admin can set them lower to save storage — or higher, if they are feeling generous. Check the about page of your own server if an upload is rejected.

UploadDefault LimitAccepted Formats
Profile picture8MBJPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP
Header image8MBJPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP
Post image16MBJPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC/HEIF
  • Animated GIFs become silent MP4 videos. Mastodon transcodes them on upload, so a 15MB GIF may still work — but an actual video file is a better source.
  • EXIF metadata is stripped. Location and camera data are removed on upload, though orientation is respected. Don’t count on copyright fields surviving.
  • Federation copies your file. Every server that sees your post caches the image, which is why admins care about upload size. Being economical is good fediverse manners.

How to resize images for Mastodon free

You don’t need Photoshop to hit 400x400 or 1500x500. The resizer above runs entirely in your browser — your image is never uploaded to a server, which is rather in the spirit of the place.

  1. Drop your image into the tool above (Mastodon is preselected).
  2. Pick a preset: Profile Picture for the 400x400 avatar, Header Image for the 1500x500 banner, or one of the post sizes.
  3. Drag the image inside the frame to reposition the crop — for headers, keep your subject out of the bottom-left where the avatar sits.
  4. Click Download and upload the result under Preferences → Profile.
  • Export at the exact dimensions. Uploading a 4000px-wide banner just makes the server resize it for you, with no say in the quality.
  • PNG for graphics, JPEG for photos. Text and flat color stay crisp in PNG; photographs compress better as JPEG and land well under the limits.
  • Check it on a dark theme. Mastodon defaults to a dark UI, so a white-background avatar will glow. Preview before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a Mastodon profile picture?

Mastodon profile pictures are 400x400 pixels (1:1). The server crops and resizes every avatar to exactly that size on upload, so export a square image at 400x400 to control what the crop keeps. The default web interface shows avatars as rounded squares while most mobile apps show circles, so keep your subject centered.

What is the Mastodon banner size?

The Mastodon header image, or banner, is 1500x500 pixels — a 3:1 aspect ratio. Your profile picture overlaps the bottom-left corner, so keep text and logos in the center or right two-thirds of the frame. This is the same ratio as a Twitter/X header, so one export covers both platforms.

What is the best image size for a Mastodon post?

Mastodon preserves whatever aspect ratio you upload, so 1280x720 (16:9) is a safe default, 1200x1200 (1:1) suits graphics and screenshots, and 1200x1500 (4:5) claims more vertical space in the timeline. Images larger than 8,294,400 pixels in total area — the equivalent of 3840x2160 — are scaled down by the server.

What is the Mastodon image file size limit?

Stock Mastodon allows 16MB per post image and 8MB for a profile picture or header image. Because Mastodon is federated, each instance sets its own limits and many smaller servers lower them to save storage. If an upload is rejected, check your server’s about page for the limits it actually enforces.

How many images can you post on Mastodon?

You can attach up to 4 images to a single Mastodon post. They render in a grid, so use the same aspect ratio across all of them to keep the layout even. Each image is subject to the server’s file size limit, 16MB by default.

Does Mastodon compress images?

Mastodon only resizes images that exceed 8,294,400 pixels of total area, and it always resizes avatars to 400x400 and headers to 1500x500. It also strips EXIF metadata and converts animated GIFs into silent MP4 videos. Exporting at the target dimensions avoids handing the server a resize job you can do better yourself.
