Twitch Emote Sizes — 28x28, 56x56 & 112x112

A Twitch emote uploads at three sizes: 28x28, 56x56, and 112x112 pixels. Each must be a PNG with a transparent background, under 1MB. Design once at 112x112 — the largest size — and scale down, because the 28x28 version is what viewers actually see in chat.

Drawn at their real pixel sizes. The 112x112 shown in the emote picker is four times the width of the 28x28 that appears inline in chat — so a design that depends on fine detail or thin lines turns to mush at the size most people see it. Test your emote at 28x28 before you finish it.

Design at 112x112, Then Scale Down

Twitch needs all three emote sizes, but you only design one. Work at 112x112 — the largest — and export scaled-down 56x56 and 28x28 copies from it. Building small and scaling up never works: the tiny version has no detail to enlarge.

  • Bold, simple shapes: one clear subject with heavy outlines. Whatever reads at 28x28 is a good emote; whatever needs 112x112 to make sense is not.
  • Keep a transparent background: emotes sit on both light and dark chat themes. A stray white box or halo shows up against dark mode — save as PNG with real transparency, never a flattened JPG.
  • Leave a little padding: art that runs to the very edge of the 112 canvas can touch neighboring text in chat. A few pixels of breathing room keeps it clean.
  • Check the 28x28 last: preview the smallest export at 100%. Thin lines, gradients, and small text are the first things to disappear — thicken or drop them.
  • Stay under 1MB: a 112x112 PNG is only a few kilobytes, so file size is rarely a problem for emotes — but flattening layers and exporting clean PNG keeps you well clear of the limit.

Subscriber & Bit Badges

Badges are the small icons beside a chatter’s name. They use a different size set from emotes — 18x18, 36x36, and 72x72 pixels — and a much tighter file limit.

  • Three sizes, PNG, transparent: upload 18x18, 36x36, and 72x72. Twitch rejects the set if any size is missing or wrongly sized.
  • Under 25KB each: badges have a far smaller ceiling than emotes. Keep the art flat and the palette limited to stay under it.
  • No animation: badges are static only. Design at 72x72 and scale down, same as emotes.
  • Read the 18x18: the smallest badge sits at roughly text height. A recognizable silhouette beats any internal detail at that size.

Channel Point Reward Icons

Custom icons for channel point rewards use the same three squares as emotes — 28x28, 56x56, and 112x112 — but with the badge-style 25KB-per-file limit.

  • PNG with transparency: icons render on the rewards panel, which follows the viewer’s theme, so avoid a solid background.
  • Each file under 25KB: the limit applies per size, not combined — the 112x112 must be under 25KB on its own.
  • Reuse emote art: if you already have an emote at these dimensions, it drops in as a reward icon with only a re-compress to hit 25KB.

Affiliate vs. Partner Emote Slots

The sizes are identical for everyone — what changes with your status is how many emote slots you can fill. Affiliates start with a handful of Tier 1 subscriber emote slots and unlock more as their Sub Points grow. Partners start with more slots and additionally unlock Tier 2 / Tier 3 and animated slots. Twitch adjusts these counts periodically, so check the official emote slots page for the current numbers.

  • Affiliate: Tier 1 subscriber emote slots that expand at Sub Point milestones, plus a follower emote and Bit-tier emotes.
  • Partner: a larger starting pool of Tier 1 slots climbing with Sub Points, plus dedicated Tier 2 / Tier 3 and animated emote slots on top.
  • Same specs either way: every slot — static or animated, Tier 1 or Tier 3 — takes the same 28 / 56 / 112 PNG upload, so one well-built emote works no matter which slot it fills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a Twitch emote?

Twitch emotes upload at three sizes: 28x28, 56x56, and 112x112 pixels. Each must be a PNG with a transparent background and under 1MB. The 112x112 shows in the emote picker and on hover; the 28x28 is what appears inline in chat.

What are Twitch emote dimensions?

The three required emote dimensions are 28x28, 56x56, and 112x112 pixels, all square. Design at 112x112 and scale down to the two smaller sizes so the fine detail holds up.

Are Discord emote dimensions the same as Twitch?

No. Discord custom emoji are a single 128x128 PNG or GIF (Discord displays them around 32x32 and 48x48), while Twitch requires three separate PNG sizes — 28x28, 56x56, and 112x112. A 112x112 Twitch emote scales up cleanly to Discord’s 128x128, but you cannot upload the identical file set to both. See our Discord image sizes guide for the full Discord set.

What size are Twitch sub badges?

Subscriber and bit badges use 18x18, 36x36, and 72x72 pixels — a different set from emotes. Each must be a PNG with a transparent background and under 25KB, and badges cannot be animated.

What file format do Twitch emotes need to be?

PNG with a transparent background for static emotes, each under 1MB. Save real transparency rather than a flattened white background so the emote reads on both light and dark chat themes.

How do I make an emote that looks good in chat?

Design at 112x112 with one bold, simple subject and heavy outlines, then preview the scaled-down 28x28 export at 100%. Chat shows the 28x28 version, so if it reads clearly at that size the emote works — thin lines and small details vanish and should be simplified or dropped.
